Nicole Philippides,
the founder and co-owner of Petit Aussie, designed her first children’s
garment at the tender age of nine. She loved to watch her grandmother
sew clothes for the family, and was inspired from this early age
to pursue in her life the art of fashion design.
In recognition of her skills, Nicole’s
parents sent her to a maison de haute couture in Alexandria, Egypt,
where she spent three years learning from her teacher and mentor,
a graduate of a Parisian school of fashion design. At the age
of nineteen, she arrived in Australia and began to work with Leon
Paule Sydney as a designer and cutter, further refining her skills.
It was when she became a mother
to Karim that the idea for Petit Aussie also was born. Nicole
saw the need to have beautiful clothes for her baby boy that would
not be outgrown in a matter of months and so designed quality
garments that would last at least a few years. The logo came a few years later and was hand written by Karim when
he was six years of age! Today he is twenty-one and still benefits
from his mama’s flair for clothing design.
Nicole remembers going with
her grandmother to the markets of Alexandria - better known as
the bazaars - to purchase beautiful silks and velvets. Now she travels to China where she procures similar rich and glorious
fabrics to fashion into the exquisite garments for which Petit
Aussie has become known all around Australia and across to the
shores of New Zealand.
All Petit Aussie designs are now produced in China.
